With MK you can now visualize your dream kitchen before it becomes a reality π. Our 3D renders allow you to see every detail, make adjustments, and perfect the design before we start building it in RL. It’s the perfect way to ensure your kitchen is exactly what you’ve always wanted!
The first iteration of your 3D layout takes about a week to complete, so don’t leave it to the last minute. The cost of a 3D design is R2600 upfront but this cost is FULLY DEDUCTIBLE from your final order—so it doesn't cost any more in the long run. π¨π‘
Winter is officially upon us! Who else is feeling the cold? βοΈ
As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it’s the perfect time to make your kitchen feel warm and welcoming. Here are some tips to help you cosy up your kitchen:
πͺ Incorporate natural wood: Wooden décor items, wooden floors, or wooden counter tops can soften the look and feel of your kitchen, making it more inviting.
π‘ Soft lighting: Use pendant lights, candles, or even a fireplace (if you're lucky!) to create ambiance and lift the mood.
π Add a rug or mat to your kitchen floor: A rug or mat adds personality and warmth to your kitchen, bringing in color, texture, and character.
π Warm colors: create a warm colour palette using shades of brown, orange, red, and yellow.
What do you think of this space? The dogs sure do look cosy!

These are the people who can be seen in the office at Milestone Kitchens factory. From right to left…
The person who’s always there is Tsitsi. She is our Production Administrator and the link between our clients and those on the factory floor creating your beautiful kitchens. She ensures our floor teams have all the information, materials and tools they need to complete your order.
Sabrina is in the factory every day checking on your units and on the MK staff, however, she’s not there 24/7 because her portfolio is well… the whole of Milestone Kitchens, so if you want to meet with Sabrina, we advise making an appointment.
Silvia is in the factory on an ad-hoc basis, usually if we need guidance in a creative capacity.
Sam works, part-time from home and part-time from the factory, she is our Multimedia Designer; all the 2 & 3D design illustrations, adverts, diagrams and kitchen layouts that you’ve seen were done by Sam. If you request a quote, Sam delegates all the quotes that come through inbox and makes sure they are responded to within 24 working hours!
At any given time you might see any of these people in the factory office - we’re all very different but we work well together because our differences complement each other! We couldn’t ask for a better team β€οΈππ.
I may be biased but I want this team to win the likes competition so help us out here please π.
Today on COLOUR COMBOS WE LOVE: Turquoise and Aged Cream seem to be a hit in the French Flair range - its gives farmhouse rustic and nostalgic with a hint of not-taking-myself-too-seriously.
Another happy client! You can see some pics of Kirsty's units if you swipe and I am sure we will soon be receiving pics of the installed kitchen - SO excited to see it.
Freestanding wardrobes offer fantastic versatility when it comes to interior design. If, for example, you have a spare room you’d like to furnish as a guest bedroom, but you suspect that you might prefer to use it as a study at a later stage, you can simply repurpose your wardrobes when it’s time to redesign – no mess, no fuss. Unlike built-in cupboards, which are a permanent commitment, legs or castors raise your wardrobe off the ground creating an air pocket between the floor and the base of the unit. This creates the illusion of greater space!
Freestanding wardrobes work to suit all wardrobe needs and elevate the luxury of your space.
"Hi there, here is the vanity in my newly done bathroom. I'm so in love with it!
Thanks again." - Zandi, Joburg.
A Journey... We recently completed a beautiful African Allure kitchen based on Silvia's design, created during discussions with the homeowners at our JHB Showroom. Have a look through the photos to see the journey from planning to the final kitchen.
We've been going through our MK factory teams with you - all of whom are so important in the journey: from plank πͺ΅ to your dream freestanding kitchen π .
Sanele and Buyi make up the Swedish Style team. Sanele used to work for a fitted kitchen company but saw the light 12 years ago and started making freestanding kitchen units with us.
Buyi is Sanele's assistant. We are very proud of Buyi for her expertise in the male-dominated carpentry world - she is not just a woman carpenter, she is also the most sought-after assistant in the factory. Everybody wants her as their assistant!
An informal competition has developed at the factory regarding who can get the most likes. The African Allure team has been winning by far - we think perhaps getting to have their adorable kids in the pic was a little unfair π. Can the Swedish Style team take the win?
Throwback Thursday to these lovely clients who appreciated our timely production and good communication.
We love people that value supporting local brands!

Rugs are underrated heroes… Rugs can add color, pattern, and texture to a kitchen. Whether you prefer a classic, modern, or eclectic look, the right rug can enhance the overall atmosphere of the space. Here are some examples where rugs are used as a way to enhance our clients’ personal style in their kitchens…
Meet Silvia Miles: FOUNDER, co-owner, furniture designer extraordinaire, dog-lover, rebounding instructor, kitchen designer, interior decorator, mother of three, leggings-obsessed, fantastic chef, born Italian, living South African, and much much more.
Official Title: Creative Director
What she’s doing when she’s not at MK? Teaching rebounding classes.
Favourite MK range? African Allure
Silvia is the founder of Milestone Kitchens. She started Milestone Furniture in 2001 which made bedroom, patio and table furniture. Then in 2010 she spotted a need and reinvented the brand and processes to specialise in freestanding kitchens. She handed the managerial reins over to her daughter Sabrina in 2019 but is still part of the business in a creative capacity (i.e. she does the fun stuff!).
Silvia has a gift for making spaces beautiful, she is also an excellent cook; this combination has (rather effectively we'd say) translated into an expert ability to design practical and beautiful kitchens and kitchen furniture.
Silvia has a BA in fine art and geography (cum laude I’ll have you know) with honours in painting, and her PGCE. How these help in running and starting a kitchen business? Well, you’d be surprised!
MILESTONE DAY CARE UPDATE
We are proud to announce that five Milestone Day Care pupils left for Grade R at the end of 2023 far better prepared than they were before they joined MDC!
MDC turned 1 in August 2023 which we took as our cue to properly dive into fundraising, budgeting and planning for a purpose-made early childhood development centre for our kids. And it’s going well!…
We are building as we have time and funds and have so far added windows and doors and cladded the floors, the walls and ceiling of the main container. We have also almost finished up a brand new outside jungle gym π€ΈπΏ.
There are so many people and organisations who have been integral to getting Milestone Day Care to where it is to day and to where it’s going! We will try and mention all of them in time, but today we’d like to say a special thank you to Pure Hope Foundation, a charitable arm of Pure Trade Africa, who not only contribute financially to the general running of the day care but also donated - in honour of one of their main donors, the late Ken Hall - THREE containers that will form the structure of our new day care premises. A massive contribution that really got the project onto its feet. π«Ά
Lastly, we are hosting a pub quiz at Milestone Factory on the 5th of April as a fundraiser. We will be providing a taco bar and drinks and it’s bound to be a fun time - we’d love to have you! Details in one of the slides below.
A well-chosen decor item goes a loooong way. Can you spot our large white ceramic gooseneck vase in all of these pics? π
The sanding team AKA Malusi and Ronald AKA Mr helpfuls AKA knows everybody's business π... This team is always ready to help out! Because sanding of our units only really starts in the second week of production they usually spend the first week maintaining the factory, the day care, helping with collections, general tidying and fixing.
You've heard a lot about our head Sander, Malusi, this year because of his fabulous pink kitchen presented to him for 20 years of service (if you haven't seen it we HIGHLY recommend you scroll back and have a look) so I won't go into him. Ronald on the other hand has been less spoken about. Ronald has 2 grandkids at Milestone Day Care, he loves dogs (he has a gorgeous ridgeback x at home), he is quiet and kind and loved by all in the factory. Ronald has a side hustle fixing up shoes and bags - please get in touch if you need something fixed!
We do also have a new sander on probation at the moment who was not yet with us for this photo, you'll meet him one day π
Chooseday! Which is your favourite front of shop kitchen from our Johannesburg Showroom (opened in 2021) to date?
Did you know we can integrate chalkboards into your Milestone Kitchens units? They are perfect for jotting down notes, doodling, or keeping track of your to-do list - let your imagination run wild!
We also make standalone chalkboards and have loads available in our JHB Showroom and Cape Town Sales Warehouse.
Just a reminder that we make bathroom vanities and wardrobes too!

The best place in the factory = without a doubt the painting room βοΈ.
It's not merely where the painting team applies their craft to Milestone Kitchens units; it's a space where camaraderie thrives. This team spends time on weekends together, commutes as a group, and supports one another in all aspects of life. They're besties! And consequently, there is always laughter and good vibes coming from this area of the factory.
π¨ Goodness and Nompumelelo started painting with Silvia in 2001 and have been with us ever since (I am sure you saw the pics we posted of Goodness's kitchen, Nompumelelo's kitchen is coming up next!).
π¨ You heard all about Dumi in our post about the French Flair team.
π¨ We also have the wonderful and kind but strict Zintombi who keeps all the factory staff in line,
π¨ And lastly, the just-get-on-with Hlengiwe who is both Nompumelelo's sister and Wonder's partner (African Allure assistant carpenter - also in previous post).
π¨ Zintombi and Hlengiwe both have children attending Milestone Day Care, and Hlengiwe is a member of the Milestone Day Care board.
I swear it's not nepotism, its just a small town (okay and maybe extra good referencesπ )!
In terms of our in-house best team photo competition: The African Allure Team is winning with 100 likes... is this the team that takes the lead?!

At half the price of our premium ranges… Consider embracing the elegance of open shelving in our Raw Range. Our Raw Range is a prime demonstration of simplicity at its finest! A timeless, minimalist look with natural chunky wood, open shelves offer effortless access, and no grappling with handles and hinges.
Pairs well with fine wine… I mean, our premium ranges! Hello ππΌ to a more open and inviting space.
Throwing it back to this gorgeous industrial style kitchen in Joburg. We are big fans! What do you think of industrial style decor?
Honestly I don't know what's cuter: the way Ndalo looks at his dad, or the way he holds his dad's tape measure (he looooves pretending to measure stuff).
Sizwe and Wonder are the Head Carpenter and Assistant Carpenter of the African Allure Range. Both of them have children at Milestone Day Care who LOVE visiting their dads in the factory.
Sizwe has been with us for 23 years (see old photo at the end), he is serious (like his son), always calm, thoughtful, neat and very hard-working. Wonder is an Assistant Carpenter In Training, he was promoted from factory driver-slash-sander last year. Wonder is very handy and known as "MacGyver" at the factory - a good addition to our carpentry team we think!
The competition for best team photo is still very much on so if you think this team's is best don't forget to give them a like π.
Our Design Team puts so much thought into the combinations of colour and detail for each custom front of showroom kitchen so that they showcase a timeless and unique free-standing Milestone Kitchen.
These kitchens are replaced relatively regularly (gotta stay on trend π) and so we give YOU the opportunity to bid on these one-of-a kind Milestone Kitchens by auctioning them off. You might find yourself a deal! Contact us for more info or browse to the "Retail Outlets" tab on our website.
This kitchen is situated at 52, 6th Street, Parkhurst in Joburg.
Which ranges Island would you want in your house?
Meet Vusi & Lindani. Vusi is the head carpenter of our French Flair range and Lindani is his assistant.
What are they most proud of from 2023?
Vusi says: aside from his amazing portrait π, he is proud of his daughter for achieving good grade 11 results and going in strong to her final school year. All of Vusi’s kids are doing well in school - they must have excellent attention to detail like their father π.
Lindani: for his promotion to assistant carpenter and for mastering his duties as a carpenter.
I feel a little more needs to be said about Lindani. Lindani is very connected to Milestone Kitchens; his father, Sipho, was a wonderful, kind and helpful man, he was the Head Sander for many years at MK and was one of MK’s very first employees. He very sadly passed away from MS in 2012.
Lindani’s mother, Cynthia, worked in Silvia’s house for many years and him and Sabrina spent loads of time together growing up.
Lindani’s sister, Dumi, works as a painter and quality inspector at the factory - she is integral to the running of the paint department.
His other sister, Slindile, is still in school but we see her at the factory sometimes when she needs to print stuff in the office, or for a visit.
Lindani is also involved in the Mpolweni dog project and has educated many on the importance of sterilizing, vaccinating and deworming dogs in Mpolweni village.
We are so lucky to have the Ngubane family as part of our team!

Loving Sizwe’s sweet funky kitchen ππ.
Head carpenter, Sizwe, is extremely tidy - his work station is always neatly laid out and organised and his new Milestone Kitchen was no different… what a dream to shoot!
Sizwe chose a Swedish Style kitchen Dulux dusted moss. He chose his units on castors because he says he wants to rearrange and clean often.
#20YearsOfService
This is Ben.
Ben is our Milestone Smalls carpenter. He has been with us since we launched Milestone Smalls (our side hustle: wooden kitchen accessories made from Milestone Kitchens off-cuts) in July 2021. Carpentry is in Ben's blood, in fact, his older brother, Joe, was the second carpenter ever to be hired by Milestone Kitchens.
Ben has 20+ years carpentry experience and is highly involved in R&D - there are always a couple of prototypes hanging about his work station. Ben is also the carpenter/handyman for Milestone Day Care (our NPO Early childhood development center available to staff children and other children from Mpolweni) where he builds the swings, jungle gyms, fixes doors, windows, locks, and the like.
Thank you to all those who have supported milestonesmalls.co.za and kept Ben in business!
These super cute hand-made, solid wood, Cutlery Holders are available on milestonesmalls.co.za along with a whole range of other items we make from our wooden offcuts.
It’s the little things!
This kitchen travelled to Zimbabwe (the joys of chews-ing freestanding) at the end of 2023 and we think it’s paws-itively fetching! Paw-fectly marvellous. We think the chocolate tiles in the scullery are fur-tastic.
And that’s the limit on my doggy puns, if anyone can think of more please comment them… you know when you might need one…
Surely you’ve all been waiting for the final pics of Melusi’s kitchen with bated breath?! Well here you go π.
As the head sander, Melusi’s team does the sanding for every single kitchen unit that leaves this factory. After 22 years with us that’s THOUSANDS of kitchens. To provide Malusi with a kitchen he can be proud of after all the kitchens he has produced that our clients are proud of needs no justification and is an honour.

Eclectic. Gorgeous.
Swedish Style on castors, with lots of original touches. What’s your favourite detail?
From funky splashbacks, carefully collected décor items collected, wooden tops, beautiful mixers, and, of course, the unique antiqued Milestone Kitchens badges we use on our units - at Milestone Kitchens we know the magic is in the details.
It's in these details that your kitchen truly comes to life. So we encourage you to go ahead, let your creativity run wild! Mix metals, blend textures, choose decorative items to suit your style, and experiment with colors.
We'd love to know – what's your favourite kitchen detail, either one you already have or one you want to add?
With free-standing kitchens, you can mix and match to suit each area's purpose. For example, you could have a stone top around your sink area, a wooden top on your island and a pastry table with a stainless steel top. You do not need meters of continuous stone work surfaces!
With Milestone Kitchens, you can choose from any of these tops for your kitchen:
πͺ΅ Pine
πͺ΅ Black Ofram (New to Milestone Kitchens)
πͺ¨ Ash
πͺ¨ Granite
π Bamboo
πͺ¨ @eeziquartz
πͺ¨ @caesarstonesa

Your kitchen, your rules, your vibe. What are some of your favourite top types?
How GREAT is this example of the FREEDOM OF FREESTANDING!?:
“Hi Sabrina,
We love and enjoy our kitchen so much! I attached some photos for you to see how it turned out.
So I do want to share our experience as a good news story! For some unknown reason I got the dimensions of the one of the walls wrong. I didn't realize the actual length is not the same as on the drawing plans (I actually didn't measure the actual wall during the process, lesson for me!) which resulted in one of the units not fitting into the space where it was designed to fit BUT having standalone units you can play around and change them to fit perfectly and for us the flow is now even better than what we planned and designed for. My Recipe Book Unit didn't fit but I could place it in the living room and its connects the kitchen with the rest of the room, which I love!! So the functionality of the units is awesome! I enjoy every one of the units!
I really enjoyed working with you too from design to delivery it was good and professional and fast! We really love our kitchen and are so happy with how it came out!”

Goodness Ngubane has worked as a painter at Milestone Kitchens since the year 2000 and we are constantly inspired by her. Following is a small piece of her story.
Goodness comes from a low income background and while we pledge to pay all of our staff a living wage, she has a number of dependents; mother, brother, son, nieces, nephews, and lives in a house without water, far from good schools. Nevertheless, Goodness has continually prioritised and preached the importance of education and she has saved and worked and mothered her only son through a university degree. He now works as a maths and science teacher at a good school in Limpopo. We think that is an amazing achievement!
She has been the Milestone Kitchens painting team leader for 10 years and is thought of as the mother of the factory because of her nurturing nature.
If only!
Clients like Andrew, who go out of their way to uplift others (for example sending us this note) are the the best kind of people - the kind we need running our country!
Side bar: It's often noticed that our management team is primarily women, the question is do we think people would notice if our team was primarily men?
Did you know Silvia Miles started a furniture business 23 years ago that became this business, Milestone Kitchens, with 3 young kids in tow. While her husband was working full time. What a woman!
Side bar: You wouldn’t believe how many times she’s been asked which man helped her start this business, yes that blatantly, not "who" helped her, which "man" helped build the first pieces, or with her finances or or...
Side side bar: LOTS of people helped #grateful, of all genders, but ultimately she started and made this company successful herself.
Did you know that more women than men work at Milestone Kitchens? INCLUDING our factory staff.
In honour of Women’s Day we want to picture a few more of the MANY incredible women in our team, so stay tuned for the next few posts!
Did you know: aside from our kitchen furniture, we’ve looked and ordered and made and shopped and sourced loads of beautiful, affordable small functional pretty items for your kitchen and home. These are available for sale in our Cape Town and Joburg Retail Outlets. Most of them are once-off pieces!
Milestone Kitchens started as a three-person team back in 1999, operating from Silvia Miles' very own garage!
1. Over the years, that garage has transformed into a massive 650 square meter factory, where innovation and craftsmanship come to life!
2. Not only has Milestone Kitchens grown in size, but it has also grown in heart by providing employment and training opportunities to up to 30 people from our local community.
See how the staff have grown and changed through the years. Can you spot anyone who’s in all of the photos?

In other exciting news, we are currently fundraising to build a brand new day care space on Milestone Farm. We’re so excited to be able to provide even better early education for the kids in our community.

This is to put your dirty laundry in. Agreed. But what we really like about it is that it makes a great stool. Sometimes you just need to sit in your bathroom. You know, while you get your wits about yourself.
Or should you have too many guests in your home and not enough seating. Just go and get the laundry basket (might have to remove the dirty laundry at this stage) and shove it under the dining room table. Voilà.

Another great, candid, real life scene. This is how mother and daughter, Silvia and I sit and plan kitchens in our lovely kitchen planning station at Milestone Kitchens Cape Town Warehouse. We never argue - we’re always one mind, never disagree or challenge each other ideas. We draw our kitchen plans super neatly on block paper and colour code in different colours, and regularly glance up to smile lovingly at each other even though we work together every day… #candid

π‘ Size: Consider the size of your Island and the number of pendant lights you need to provide enough light. Odd numbers usually look better so 1 light or 3 lights in an island between 1600 and 2100mm long, longer than that and you could even go with 5 lights!
π‘ Consider putting up the lights after your freestanding island has been moved in so that you have the option to change the positioning of the island until you know exactly where you want it.
π‘ Style: Choose a light that complements the style of your kitchen and home. Don't be scared to go funky! This is functional an area of your décor where you can choose to make a statement or do something different without buying a décor item that isn't "used" for anything - you use your lights every day so you can be adventurous without feeling like you are wasting money.
π‘ Height: Consider the height of your ceiling when choosing a pendant. You do not want the pendant hanging too low and getting in the way.
π‘ Colour: Choose a colour that complements the rest of your kitchen.

Give it a go! And let us so know what you think below?
Our kitchen planner just got a major upgrade! π₯ Our multimedia designer, Sam, is in the process of finalising an online kitchen planner that will make designing your dream kitchen a breeze.
Big things are happening, so stay tuned! Official release will be in the next 2 weeks… along with the opening of this year’s Home Magazine competition!
Who’s excited? Let us know in the comments below!
Most people compare our prices to chipboard or melamine kitchens and come to the conclusion that we are expensive, but if you compare our units with other QUALITY, solid wood (we do not use melamine or chipboard), kitchen companies, you will find that with Milestone Kitchens you pay as little as half as much as you would for a fitted solid-wood kitchen. We offer excellent value for money when it comes to solid wood kitchens.
We challenge you to do the homework, get other quotes and compare. But remember to compare with SOLID WOOD kitchens and not your standard melamine and chipboard ones.
Have you met Phindile? If not, you’re making at least 1 mistake… you haven’t visited Milestone Kitchens gorgeous showroom at 52 6th street in Parkhurst, JHB.
Phindile is our Showroom Manager. She runs the showroom in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. She is in charge of all things showroom-y: stock lists, sales reports, deliveries, quotation requests, enquiries, the showroom layout, managing the other showroom staff and more. Her favourite part of her job is liaising with clients in-store about colours, tops options, handles and other design details for their Milestone kitchen.
Phindile is stylish and beautiful and practical - just like our kitchens π. She has such a dry sense of humour we sometimes have no idea if she’s joking or not! We often wish she wasn’t based in a different city, not only because of the aforementioned sense of humour but also because she is super efficient and hard working. Phindile has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration, and has her eyes on a course in digital marketing. Milestone Kitchens hopes to support her in this journey.
What have we established? whether to meet the wonderful Phindile or to see our units, you SHOULD visit our showroom.
This client already had a few pieces she loved. She asked us to help her use these in her kitchen with new Milestone Kitchens units - we think it turned out beautifully. With freestanding units you can totally incorporate those fabulous pieces you don't want to lose into your kitchen.
See below to see the 3D layout vs the real thing. Aside from the obvious advantages, visualizing the kitchen beforehand gives you peace of mind if you want to try something out of the ordinary.

We LOVE IT when clients do a bit of mixing and matching. Not everything has to be the same! We are making this kitchen as I type this -
French Flair range painted in a mix of Aged Cream and Dusted Moss, with a mix of blonde Ash and medium Ash tops and a mix of plinth and castors for the base construction.
Can not wait to show you the final product.

Did you know Milestone Kitchens also offers vanities and wardrobes?
This is a kitchen we shot with Ideas Magazine a couple of years ago. We were recently reminded of it when a client sent this pic to us as “inspo”… pink is sooooo trendy right now so we thought we’d share it with you again.
Don’t be scared to be daring with colour!
SO many of you ask what our Swedish Style looks like in aged cream (the standard color for our French Flair range)… well, behold!
Also - how cool is the chandelier?
Note: all of our standard colours are interchangeable between ranges at no extra cost.
The Raw Range mixes beautifully with our premium ranges... if you really want a solid wood freestanding kitchen but your budget won't allow for it, why not consider a mix of our new and more affordable Raw Range and the African Allure, French Flair or Swedish Style range?
Pictured here is a Swedish Style Baby Island in pink and a Swedish Style Grocery Cupboard (in the back) with most of the Raw Range 7 Piece Starter Set Special.

Hey everyone! Sabrina here, we've been busy setting some pretty exciting goals for 2023. And I just can't wait to share a few of them with you all!
First up, we are launching our brand new online kitchen planner WebApp. This will make it easy for you to design your dream freestanding kitchen. We can't wait for you to try it out! It should be up and running by the end of February.
Next, we're creating a more in-depth recycling system for our factory waste. We care about the environment and our beautiful country, and we're always looking for ways to be more sustainable.
This year in the digital world, we're aiming to reach 10k followers on Instagram. So spread the love people! We love connecting with all of you and sharing our beautiful kitchens with the world. Silvia and I also plan to be brave and increase our face time on Instagram. Our business is small and you get that personal touch with us so its important that you can see that on our socials. We also want you all to see our amazing staff and get to know them better - we aim to tell you more of their stories.
This year for Milestone Smalls we’re creating a wedding registry option... so if your big day or a friend’s is coming up consider sustainable locally-made wedding gifts and have a look at milestonesmalls.co.za
We're also planning to continue building our new storage facility. This is something we are doing ourselves if and when we have time - It is going to be a game changer for us. The plan is to have it complete by the end of 2024.
And finally, we have our eyes on a few courses for our staff, upskilling and educating our staff is very important to us. Not only do we want to make sure our service and product are the best but we also want to do our bit to create a better future for South Africans.
So there you have it. We've got a lot planned for 2023, and its already underway! Thank you for your continued support, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for Milestone Kitchens β€οΈ.
The sun is out, the sky is blue and it's time to get back to work π... We're all back in the office! We hope that your holidays were as relaxing and fulfilling as ours, but we're looking forward to getting back into the grind.
Despite the challenges that load-shedding provides us, we have big plans and we look forward to continuing to create beautiful freestanding kitchens and educational and inspirational kitchen content.
Hello JOBURG! We will be selling Milestone Smalls at the Rosebank Sunday market this Sunday.
Come and get those beautiful, locally made, eco-friendly, wooden Christmas presents!
Let me introduce you (or re-introduce if you been supporting us since Jan 2021) to Silvia Miles.
Official Title: Creative Director
What she’s doing when she’s not at work: Teaching or step aerobics and rebounding classes.
Silvia is the founder of Milestone Kitchens. She started Milestone furniture in 2001 and then saw a need and specialised in freestanding kitchens in 2010. She handed the managerial reins over to her daughter Sabrina in 2020 but is still part of the business in a creative capacity (i.e. she does the fun stuff).
Silvia has a gift for making spaces beautiful, she is also a mother and an excellent coo - this combination has (rather effectively I’d say) translated into an expert ability to design practical and beautiful furniture for kitchens and spaces, and evolved Milestone Kitchens into what it is today.
Silvia has a BA degree in painting and geography (cum laude I’ll have you know) with honours in painting, and her PGCE. The PGCE has been really useful for the day care program we run for our staff kids. The rest of her qualifications… Well we are still not sure what they have to do with freestanding kitchens, but we do know she is a damn good kitchen designer!

As part of the HOW TO STYLE YOUR KITCHEN masterclass we hosted on Saturday Silvia “dressed” the green kitchen in our front of shop at 52 6th street, Parkhurst, Randburg. We’ll share some of her tips over the next few weeks - stay tuned!
This entire kitchen is actually up for auction. There are 9 pieces with solid ash tops and it is suitable for a medium to large kitchen. Click here to contact us to place your bid!
Haaaave you met Sam?
You don’t see much of Sam on our social media - that’s because she’s pretty quiet and usually oblivious to the outside world, lost in the design world behind her 2 screens (she’d have 6 if we’d let her but we actually like seeing her face in the office).
Sam is a huge part of what happens behind the scenes at Milestone Kitchens. Her main job is to create 2D and 3D kitchen designs and quotes for potential clients, but because we are a small company she does lots of other stuff too! Sometimes she is on the factory floor quality checking, sometimes she is designing magazine or social media ads, sometimes she is doing fancy computer stuff in the “back end“ of our website (wherever that is…?), sometimes she’s loading a truck, figuring out what happened to Bryan’s tape measure or working on our BRAND NEW kitchen planner #comingsoon #staytuned.
Sam is hard-working and determined, and not only in her job - she only ever misses one of Silvia’s step or rebounding classes if she has a million 3D layouts to do in a day.
Sam’s official title is Multimedia Designer and she has a BA degree in Visual Communications. Milestone Kitchens has become waaaay more “21st century” since Sam joined us. She has been with us for almost 3 years and is now an integral part of the team. We are so proud of everything she has achieved for Milestone Kitchens thus far!

So many clients ask us... "Are your units suitable for small kitchens?" and the answer is: YES! Certainly.
Have a look at these 2 cute kitchen layouts for small kitchens our design team just finished designing.
DID YOU KNOW that all of our floor units have a 100mm "splash back" at the back of the top, this splash back sits flush against the wall and overhangs the unit by10 to 15mm so that if your walls are not perfectly straight or you have a skirting running along the floor it doesn't cause a big gap between the wall and the splash back.
Side bar: How gorgeous is the grain and colour on this Ash top? π
A long standing client of ours just sent us these pics of the black African Allure kitchen she bought off of our JHB showroom floor. This was the front-of-shop kitchen we had in Joburg prior to the one in there now. Every couple of months we auction off our front-of-shop kitchen, consider it an INSTANT kitchen!
This client added on a few units in Aged Cream - oh the freedom of free-standing! Pics of the scullery coming soon…
You can place your bid on our new front-of-shop kitchen at any time. Bidding closes in January 2023.

Milestone Kitchens is starting a small day care for pre-school children (aged 0-5) of Milestone Kitchens employees and their family members. While our staff members work full-time at the factory (almost all of them as primary bread winners of large families), many of their children are looked after by friends and family. Access to high-quality childcare is limited, and some parents only see their children on weekends.
We are motivated by tonnes of research highlighting the importance of quality early years developmental care, and how it can shape the trajectory of a child's holistic development and build a strong foundation for their future.
Our mission: we’re in the business of improving access to early childhood developmental care for the children in our community.
Our vision: we want to build a community that is focused on working together to improve outcomes for its tiniest members.
We are so excited to begin this project, but we are a small business and need a little help here and there. We know that every South African with the means to improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves are doing so in some way, big or small - this is the nature of our beautiful country! So, no expectations, but if you have the capacity to contribute any of the following things, please get in touch! We are looking for:
πΌOld toys catching dust
πΌBalls for throwing or kicking
πΌChildren's books catching dust
πΌStationary
πΌColouring books
πΌOld pots or cooking utensils
πΌVeggies from your garden
πΌNon-perishable foods

Meet Zibusizo, known to us as Mr Boogy (for reasons he won’t discloseπΊ…) or Z. Mr Boogy joined our Johannesburg showroom (at 52 6th Street, Parkhurst, Randburg) about 3 months ago. He keeps the garden looking gorgeous, cleans the showroom, makes the windows sparkly, repaints the walls at every given opportunity and does any other hand work required. He takes pride in his work and always puts his best foot forward, and always does an amazing job - we are all huge fans!
Z works for us part time so if anyone around Johannesburg is looking for part-time help in the garden, paint work or similar, please get in touch with us and we’ll give you his contact details.
We have a few more new additions to the Milestone Kitchens staff and we are looking forward to introducing them all to you.

We’ve been working on the Raw Range for almost a year now. The aim with this range is to make free-standing kitchens more accessible to everyone by making them more affordable. The 7 Piece Starter Set Special in the Raw Range goes for R30 000 + VAT.
This range is made entirely of solid Pine wood, it is lightly sealed and is not customisable.
Dress it up or dress it down, this range is timeless. It also mixes beautifully with our more premium ranges.

Such EXCITING news!
As many of you know we have been working on an economical range for the past year. This range is designed for people starting out, who love freestanding kitchens but can't afford units from our premium ranges. It is called the RAW RANGE and we are launching at the ECR House & Garden Show 2022. #hgshow2022
The Raw Range includes simple units available in a number different sizes. It is not painted or customisable. It is lightly sealed, and made entirely from solid wood. It matches beautifully with our other ranges so if you would like to include custom units with custom sizing you can simply choose units from our other ranges.
Want to see it? Visit us at the ECR House & Garden Show at the Durban Exhibition Center between June 24th and July 3rd.
Comment, like, or share this post to go into the draw for a complementary All-Access, Everyday Entry Ticket to the ECR house & Garden show.
Cleaning and maintaining your free-standing kitchen is significantly easier than in a fitted kitchen. The units can be moved away from the wall for cleaning and to repair appliances or leaks. You can even get your units on wheels!
There are no unnecessary linings and cover strips covering the gaps between the units and each other or the walls and floor where rats, cockroaches and other vermin nest.
On to our final point - and probably the most obvious advantage of free-standing kitchens is the ease of hygiene and maintenance.
Got a leak in your plumbing? No need to rip up your cupboards to get to it, simply disconnect the plumbing move the unit forward and fix it.
Cleaning behind your units is very easy, simply move them forward and do what you must.
An electrical problem with your oven? Your electrician doesn't need to bring 4 people to get the oven out, simply move the unit forward.
Prioritize practicality! Not only does practicality make your life easier, it is also a total trend at the moment.
Another way to save costs with Milestone Kitchens is that you can get yourself a solid wood high-end kitchen without using an expensive interior designer to put it together for you.
You can:
1 - Design the kitchen yourself using our online kitchen planner.
2 - Ask us to design (it in conjunction with you) and provide you with a 2D layout, or
3 - Ask us to design (it in conjunction with you) and provide you with a 3D layout.
A fitted kitchen needs to be constructed all at once - this can be a huge capital outlay for you.
With Milestone’s free-standing units system, you can buy units and improve your kitchen piece by piece as your budget allows, avoiding the hit of a full kitchen renovation all at once.
Stay tuned for more on this topic.
On a budget but want your dream kitchen? Buy one unit at a time as your budget allows π₯
We've been very busy at the factory and working on our new sales outlet in Cape Town (6 Ravenscraig road, Woodstock), and our new range (the Raw Range - launching at ECR House and Garden Show in late June) but we're back to tell you more about WHY FREESTANDING KITCHENS ARE THE BEST. Get excited π.
If you're unsure about designing your freestanding kitchen yourself (using our comprehensive list of units), our Design Team can do it for you, remotely, and you can walk through your "theoretical" kitchen in 3D!
This is also a great option if you know what you want but want to see it before you order it.
This video is of an African Allure Kitchen in soft white we planned a few months ago and today it gets shipped off too Mauritius!
A fitted kitchen is partially completed in a workshop, then it is delivered in pieces to your home where it is assembled on site in your kitchen space.
Milestone Kitchens units are made in our factory and then delivered to your home fully constructed and complete; ready to be used.
If you would like to save even more costs you may fetch the kitchen from our factory yourself.
A fitted kitchen then needs to be installed by experts.
A free-standing kitchen does not have to be installed by experts. The units are simply placed in position by you with minimal aid from tradespeople.
Those who are willing, may save even more costs by attempting the plumbing and electrical work themselves.
If you want to see our units in real life before you order them online? Touch, see and smell our units at one of our branches near you...
π We have a showroom in Johannesburg - 52 6th Steet, Parkhurst, Randburg, Gauteng.
π We have a sales warehouse in Cape Town - Unit 1 Ravenscraig Mews, 6 Ravencraig road, Woodstock.
π Or you can come see us at our factory in KZN (by appointment only) - Milestone Farm, R614 Wartburg road, KZN.
All of the above are on google maps!
Today it is common practice for architects to draw a fitted kitchen for each house. Once the design is approved by you it goes to a workshop and the kitchen is built to a point where it can be transported and assembled in your kitchen space. The whole process can be quite long from discussion, to measure up, design and construction, delivery and eventual assembly by specialist tradesmen in your kitchen space. All this before you can see and examine the kitchen in its finished form.
In contrast, our Milestone Kitchens free-standing kitchen range is on display on our website and in our showroom, where the full range of units designed for all your kitchen needs are shown. The units are shown in a number of different styles and colours for you to pick what suits you best. You choose your units and your design preferences, place your order online, and we manufacture your kitchen in our factory. Approximately six weeks later your fully assembled units are delivered to your home, and ready for you to arrange them in your space. You might need the help of a plumber or electrician, but that is all!
Avoid the shops, and avoid having loads of tradesmen and strangers in your home by ordering your kitchen online.
You can order your freestanding kitchen on your own, from the comfort of your home. You don't need a ton of tradesmen in your house fitting your kitchen, you just move them into your house, ready to use.
Milestone Kitchens freestanding units are each personally checked throughout the design process by owners and directors Sabrina and Silvia. Our construction process includes that personal touch π.
A sneaky summary on why the construction of our free-standing kitchen units should compel you to invest in a free-standing kitchen.
Free-standing kitchens are made up of self-supported, movable, mobile units that arrive at your house complete and ready for placement.
We often feel that practicality is a totally under-rated aesthetic. When something looks practical and solid, it looks good. Free-standing units have gaps between them, there are no hidden, unused spaces where somebody has tried to hide joins with cover strips and linings, you can SEE how the unit holds itself up. You can see all the spaces so there is nowhere for a rat or cockroach to hide. Every piece makes perfect sense to the layman's eye. This practical look make your kitchen look BEAUTIFUL.
Love this article with ideas on how to style your freestanding kitchen - https://www.realhomes.com/design/freestanding-kitchen-ideas
Milestone Kitchens freestanding kitchen units are made primarily of solid wood. Wood is an unpredictable, natural product that can move and change shape BUT it is always solid, sturdy, durable and beautiful.
Something that really seems to appeal to people about free-standing kitchens is that the units HOLD THEMSLEVES UP. They don't need the support of the walls to stand up. They are stand-alone pieces of furniture that you can take with you when you move house.
Over the next few days we will be discussing the construction of our freestanding units and highlight some of the reasons why you should to choose to go with Milestone Kitchens in particular.
Next up... CONSTRUCTION.
Milestone Kitchens units are hand-crafted, each piece is made by our proudly South African, skilled carpenters, exactly to your specifications. None of our units are made of mass-manufactured sides, doors, drawers and "stapled" together.

This client originally had a few French Flair units in our standard colour, Aged Cream, when they needed a change they bought a few more units and repainted them.
If that’s not creative freedom I don’t know what is!
You are free to choose different working surfaces, base constructions and colours, all in one kitchen.
In this kitchen you can see stainless steel tops, wooden tops and Caesarstone tops, with both castors and legs all in the same space. And it looks great!
CREATIVE FREEDOM:
Want to change your floors? You don't have to rip up your whole kitchen to do it, just move your freestanding units units out the way.
Our self-supported, stand alone, movable units give you the freedom to update your kitchen one step at a time without huge investment all at once.
Mix and Match:
Love that vintage dresser from your grandmother? Do you have a beautiful piece of furniture you made yourself and want to use? With free-standing units you can totally incorporate these special pieces into your kitchen. The kitchen featured above is a Swedish Style kitchen in Durban with a couple of personal touches and a beautiful antique dresser incorporated into the design.
We call it... CREATIVE FREEDOM.
This week we're delving into the topic of Creative Freedom and how free-standing kitchen units give you this freedom in your kitchen design.
Can you think of any examples?
You know how they say change is like a holiday? Re-arrange your kitchen, easy peasy!

Do you, or does someone in your family love to build, create and make? Is your house not big enough for a workshop? Do you store tools under your sink or in your wardrobe or under the stairs? Is your house big enough for a workshop but you fancy a neat/stylish way of storing your tools? Perhaps you aren’t even a big/hugely enthusiastic carpenter but you like to keep some tools for special occasions?
Answer ‘yes' to any of these questions and Milestone Kitchens has got you covered.
I mean, if there’s one thing we have a lot of, it’s tools! We’re always looking for better, neater and more effective ways to store them.
The Milestone Kitchens team has designed the attractively practical Workshop in a Cupboard to create storage for all of your building, carpentry and other DIY needs.
Thick, chunky and rustic enough to elegantly absorb any dents or scratches, the Workshop in a Cupboard includes a thick wooden working top, peg boards to hang tools, shelves with a lip so that loose screws and drill bits don’t roll out and drawers for your tools and extension cords.
Strip lighting can be included.
Concept: "an idea of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics or particulars; a construct".
Milestone Kitchens Concept Cupboards thus take the idea of something and put it, in it’s entirety, into a cupboard.
Check them out on our latest posts and let us know what you think!?
If you have ever had an unwelcome explosion of fabric, pins, patterns, threads, bobbins, brushes, scissors, string, buttons and tape all over your desk, floor or dining room table while pursuing your favourite hobby then Milestone Kitchens latest design is for you.
With Milestone Kitchen's new Craft Cupboard, you are able to take a step back from your project, close your cupboard doors and have your space transformed into a neat uncluttered area in seconds.
The beautifully designed Craft Cupboard is the solution we have designed for keeping your sewing, craft or hobby space neat and practical AND pretty. Although the cupboard was designed specifically for sewing, it lends itself well to all forms of arts and crafts. We can customise it to suit whatever it is that tickles your creative fancy.
What’s stopping you? Everyone needs one of these. Order yours now!
Perhaps your house is not big enough for a laundry and you can never find a place for all your housekeeping stuff. No problem, Milestone Kitchens has a simple solution for you. We offer you a cupboard that can house your washing machine, vacuum cleaner, broom, ironing board, iron, detergents, buckets and whatever other equipment you deem necessary for housekeeping that haven’t got their own space. All this can be stored in one compact space behind Milestone Kitchens stylish cupboard doors - in your House Keeping Cupboard.
You have the freedom to place your House Keeping cupboard anywhere, it doesn’t have to be in a ‘laundry room’ because, you might not have one of those anyway. And it looks great too so it does not have to be ‘out of the way’.
Milestone Kitchens House Keeping Cupboard’s dimensions are 1400mm wide x 650mm deep x 2100mm high. It is available in all three of our ranges, the African Allure, French Flair it Swedish Style in their standard colours or as a customised unit to suit your space and colour scheme.
Milestone Kitchens innovative Kitchen in a Cupboard is the perfect all in one solution for modern, easy living in small spaces.
The world is changing and so is the kitchen, as we know it. Space comes at a premium, in some packed cities apartments are being built without any kitchens at all. Today's living is all about modernising, minimising and simplifying. People are eating out more. Restaurants are better,
good 'fast food' is more easily accessible, and takeaways and home delivery meals are becoming increasingly popular.
This is why Milestone Kitchens developed the Kitchen in a Cupboard (KIAC) - a compact, all-in-one solution. The KIAC is great for young couples with small homes, or retirees looking to scale down. It's also fantastic for B&Bs, holiday flats, bachelor pads, studio apartments or small beach cottages.
Pair it with a small table or an extra-small Mini-Centre island for seating, and you can even entertain guests. Once they’ve left simply close the doors and the Kitchen in a Cupboard transforms into a tidy, out of the way package with the appearance of an elegant cupboard. Put it in the lounge, dining room, or entertainment area. It's less expensive than a full-size kitchen and far more functional than an ordinary cupboard.
You may choose your Kitchen in a Cupboard in one of our three ranges, African Allure, French Flair or Swedish Style. You can also choose your own colour - just send us a paint code for your choice of colour and we'll make it happen.
Is your office space encroaching on your chill space? Is it taking over your room or dining room? With Milestone Kitchens Office in a Cupboard you can close the door on it, take a deep breath and relax when you are don’t for the day, all you need to do is stand up, tuck your chair in and close your KINK doors. Out of sight, out of mind.
The ergonomical desk design allows for an eye level screen, it has plenty of shelving designed for textbooks, files, paper and even the ever necessary tea pot. There is a slide out shelf for a printer, drawers for your stationary, important papers or that sneaky slab of chocolate you need to keep you going. We know how annoying it can be when there are cables all over your desk, so we have also included a cable hole in the desk to keep them out of your way.
More on our concept cupboards to come.
One of many compliments we have received about Nomonde, our Production Administrator and Phindile, our Showroom Manageress. Swipe right to put faces to the names. We are so glad to have these talented, enthusiastic and hardworking individuals as a part of our special team.

Guys. Seriously. Maya is such a good model.
Have a look at the photos from the 3D presentation - this is what makes it possible for us to quote clients based anywhere in the world!
This client had a specific vision in mind for his kitchen and we made sure we brought it to life the way he wanted us to, using our 3D kitchen design option.
The Seven Piece Starter Set Special (7PSSS) has been very carefully structured to give you all the items you will need for a medium to large kitchen. You are getting a very good deal because you are you saving R10 853 on the original cost of the units if you had to add them up individually.
We have a 7PSSS available in each of our ranges AT ALL TIMES. We also still have a further discounted 7PSSS available in Swedish Style (because of it's working but wonky handles).

So many units in production, so many units in storage for next year, so much excitement for our end of year party.... There's a lot going on! It's been a great year but flip we're excited for month long break!
You know what they say, "in South Africa, December isn't a month, it's a lifestyle" π.
We'd love to hear what you're most looking forward to during the festive season?
A 7PSSS in African Allure, painted cream (standard for French Flair) we love the vibe of space, air and versatility you get in this kitchen.
Don't forget about our special - get your own 7 Piece Starter Set Special for R60 000 ex. VAT. Offer valid until 22nd December. We will not be arranging any more deliveries after the 15th of December.
Also, totes love the Christmas vibe going on here! πππ
This client bought a kitchen for her mom and to keep it more affordable chose to go with our standard 7 Piece Starter set Special for her kitchen. We think she has done a wonderful job and these pictures perfectly illustrate the freedom you have with freestanding units - everything doesn't have to fit perfectly together!
P.s. They painted that splashback themselves - how awesome!?
The Seven Piece Starter Set Special (7PSSS) units have been very carefully chosen to fit an average medium to large kitchen. We have selected the units that we feel are the most necessary and useful in a kitchen. This set of 7 units comes at R64000 (excl. VAT) this is R10 853 less than if you bought the units individually. If your kitchen is too small for all these units you may decrease the size of your units at no extra cost. Remember though, if you find you have too many units, they are very versatile and can be used anywhere in the house. For example, the Grocery Cupboard could be used as a linen cupboard or the Double Door Unit could be used as a vanity in the bathroom.
1 - The Sink Unit with space for dishwasher: 1800 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 900 mm high
2 - The Cutlery Server: 1800 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 900 mm high
3 - The Double Door Unit: 900 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 900 mm high
4 - The Wall Unit: 900 mm wide x 300 mm deep x 900 mm high
5 - The Grocery Cupboard: 900 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 2100 mm high
6 - The Coffee Dresser: 900 mm wide x 600 mm deep x 2100 mm high
7 - The Spice Rack: 740 mm wide x 140 mm deep x 1080 mm high (780 mm high for Swedish Style only)
The special price includes Pine tops and painting in one of our standard colours. Changing the colour to a colour of your choice will cost an additional 10%. There is no 5% deduction for taking units without the tops on the 7PSSS like there is with a normal order. Should you wish to change the type of top you would like, we will quote you accordingly for the top of your choice.
The 7PSSS is available in all 3 ranges, on legs, castors or plinths and with your choice of handles and colour from our standard ranges.
We're offering a very limited extra discount on our 7 Piece Starter Set Specials... We have one 7PSSS in each range in stock going for an extra R4 600 off (on top of the R10 850 the set is already discounted).
We are selling each of these sets at R60 000 - the only catch is that you need to make payment before the 22nd of December, when we come back in the new year, these sets will no longer be available with that extra R4600 discount.
Check out our post later today and tomorrow for more info on the 7PSSS.

Feeling so proud π₯°. Look at this wonderful message we received from a client:
"Hi Silvia and Sabrina,
What a pleasant experience with the ordering of my unit, from start to finish the level of customer service and care was excellent!
Nomonde is so professional, communicates well and kept me up to date throughout the production process. What an asset Nomonde is to your team!
We were also so touched by the gift given to us and the personalised letter - you ladies certainly know how to add value!

Feedback we received at an expo on our Office in a Cupboard... Swipe right for pics of the product.
Houses and apartments are becoming smaller, people are working from home more and more and thus the need to have an elegant, compact solution to your office space is becoming more pressing. Hence, our Office in a Cupboard concept was born.
Milestone Kitchens’ Office in a Cupboard or KINK (Kantoor in ‘n Kas) keeps all your work and office paraphernalia in a neat, compact cupboard so that when you need a break or are done for the day, all you need to do is stand up, tuck your chair in and close your KINK doors. Out of sight, out of mind!
If you haven't seen it yet we'd love to hear your thoughts?

This cute kitchen was an empty room in the morning and a fully functioning kitchen by the evening - installation took half a day!
Hi All, Sabrina here again.
I am getting into this 6 week check-in thing. It's like President Ramaphosa - once you start with addressing your people, you get hooked π.
I wanted to do a bit of an appreciation post for Silvia Miles (my mom). Silvia, the founder, owner and creative genius behind our wonderful brand took a step back from running Milestone Kitchens 2 years ago and I took over. But FLIP it's been a crazy couple of months (slash years) and boy AM I GLAD she's still jogs up to factory regularly with her 3 dogs in tow...
Dealing with frequent load shedding, theft, violent protests and burning farms around us, amidst a double recession, and a global pandemic, has not been easy and sometimes small, obvious things slip through the radar. And I am just so so so so so glad that Mom Miles, with all of her infinite wisdom and firm support, has been around to catch the bits and pieces that fall through the cracks every now and then.
Thanks Mom,
Sabrina xxx
This room was 100% empty in the morning and had a full kitchen set up by noon.

These are the same units used in 2 different kitchens for 2 different kitchens!

Feedback FSaturday. Yay for great client feedback!
This one was from clients in Florida to Sam. They couldn't believe how easy it is to design a kitchen remotely.
We've always been hesitant about filling up your kitchen corners with wall units, and especially tall units! It's just so hard to make units like that fit the freestanding kitchen look and ethos, but we think we've made it happen with our new Corner Wall Unit!
We promised a profesh pic of this unit a few weeks ago and here it is:
African Allure, in Graphite Black, with distressed edges and Antique Cup Handles.
The Swedish Style version coming soon.
Just Milestone Kitchens trying to save you having to grapple over this decision in the future... Save this for one day when you need to buy a microwave.
You're welcome π.
How gorgeous is this kitchen design? π
We haven't made it yet but hopefully we do and we'll DEFINITELY do a photoshoot for you all!
Also, our Multimedia Designer, Sam, is a total whizz with 3D designs. Well done Samantha!

Design Trend 6: Rounded Shapes
A circle can't "fall over" kind of makes it seemed balanced hey? That's how we feel about rounded shapes in decor - they feel balanced.
You always want balance right? Throughout your life... in your work (not toooo much tough stuff, but not too much easy stuff either!), balance in your relationships (please, if you're both working then surely you're both doing the domestic stuff!), balance in your food (anyone else LOVE Masterchef?)... and of course, balance in your home decor.
We've shown some examples of how you can use curves to calm those nerves above:
1 - Round coffee tables and lights.
2 - A round table in a kitchen.
3 - A couple of curvy stools and a clock in a kitchen.
4 - Round bowls/plates in a dresser.
5 - Jars.
6 - A round mat/rug.
7 - Round lights.
What else can you think of?

Design Trend 6: Rounded Shapes
This is such an interesting new trend!
Living spaces that have only sharp edges and lines can create a sense inflexibility. As carpenters we might find it hard to accept the premise that too much order is a bad thing - but it can be! One needs to feel as if they have that emotional wiggle room. After what the last few weeks year and a half has been like it's no surprise this trend is so big!
Rounded shapes are connected - and so they feel timeless and stable. Curved decor accessories soften and relax a room. When you walk into a room, rounded shapes will give you a sense of completeness, unity and harmony.
Rounded shapes are graceful, feminine, and sensual. The fabulous thing about using curves is that you can soften and relax your room without compromising on elegance and class.
Keywords to associate with this trend: Safety, unity, connection.
Dècor Ideas: think round mats and rugs, round pendant lights, big round bowls and baskets, round cushions, a big round clock, round stools. Anything that might soften up your space a bit!
#decortrends #roundedshapes #MilestoneKitchens #InteriorDesign
We're a little sad to be moving on to the last design trend we're going to discuss with you: Rounded Shapes. There's a couple of interesting psychology-based theories on why rounded shapes have become trendy lately... Read our next post for more info!

Interior design trend 5: SPLASHES OF COLOUR
What are we talking about? We're talking about intense dual tones for walls and furniture. We're talking about using colour in decor not only to "match" but to make a statement, to catch your eye.
Why? Bright colours are playful, interesting and stimulating. They are modern (mostly because they are brave).
Why else? Intense and bright colours are known to improve mood and create a happy atmosphere.
Which? Honestly, go wild. But if you want to get specific primary yellow is a big colour at the moment, it is modern and bright but FEELS vintage and timeless. You can pair with dark colours. Swipe right for an example.
Forest greens and deep blues are also big, read more about ocean hues in our previous few posts.

Interior design trend 5: Splashes of colour. More info on this trend coming later today.
In the meantime here is a 3D layout of a colourful African Allure we did for a couple with a very quirky style from Florida, USA. We haven't quite finalised the design yet and it looks like they are going to go for colourful terrazzo tops too!
We'd love to hear from you! What's your take on colour in your home?

We took a break from ocean hues and design trends for a day to celebrate the INCREDIBLE women we have at Milestone Kitchens (see previous post).
But, we're back onto décor and so excited to continue exploring current design and décor trends.
#OceanHues feel calming, relaxed and tranquil, and also usually make a space more MODERN. Do you have any ocean hues in your house? We'd love to know! Tell us how you've incorporated them? Or send us a pic! Or even better - post a story and tag us you trendy folk π.

These last few days we've been discussing Trend 4: Ocean Hues.
The shades of the ocean feel fresh, light and modern. We can totally understand why everyone loves them.
Please read through our previous posts for more!

How to make your space feel calm, tranquil and easy to be in? Add some blue! Ocean hues are a big trend at the moment, from bold dark navy to light baby blues. We can see why!
#DecorTrends #oceanhues #kitcheninspo #freestandingkitchen #MilestoneKitchens
Decor trend 4: Ocean Hues are all things ocean-y, blue-y, turquise-y, from deep inky tones to soft aquas.
Ocean hues speak to a tranquil home:
π They give you a sense of peace, calm and comfort.
π They give the illusion of open space.
When it comes to design:
π Ocean hues are open to interpretation and can therefore be easily combined with other colours.
π They are modern.

What's your favourite special touch to this kitchen?
We love how personal and how creative you can get with maximalism-style décor. If you'd like to read more about this décor trend and others, please head to our profile and have a look through our recent posts.
Our Njabulo book shelf only really works with a bit of maximalism-type décor.
This one is oh so beautifully curated π.
#Decortrend3 #MilestoneKitchens #NjabuloBookshelf #Maximalism
Maximalism encourages reusing and recycling. Rather than throwing out things when we tire of them, maximalists find new ways to restore them to good use.
#Decortrends #maximalism #decorinspo
Maximalism ~ “In the arts, maximalism, a reaction against minimalism, is an aesthetic of excess. The philosophy can be summarized as "more is more", contrasting with the minimalist motto "less is more".
You know, when we shot this kitchen we actually took out a lot of the personality-ridden quirky bits and bobs in order to try and make it look more minimal, because minimalism was a huge trend at the time. Now we wish we had also done some shots that included those extra pieces of the homeowner’s soul.
Can you remember what decor Trend 3 is? This week we'll be exploring it.
It's personal, it's highly decorative. Get excited π.
This is a Milestone Kitchen from our discontinued range English Elegance, it is very similar to African Allure. It is in fact the staff kitchen at Milestone Factory.

Trend 2: Earthy Shades π
We'd love to hear from you! What are your favourite aspects of the earthy shades trend?
Please look at our last few posts for more about this décor trend that is here to stay!
Neutrals, browns, naturals π #EarthyShades.
Refer to our previous posts for a little more about this trend.
Earthy shades will always feel wholesome, natural and warm. And people will ALWAYS want to be in spaces that feel wholesome, natural and warm. Earthy shades are therefore: t i m e l e s s .
Earthy shades... Don't they give you that warm fuzzy feeling?
This Swedish Style Milestone Kitchen was done in 2014, it was beautiful then and it's beautiful now - you can't go wrong with Earthy Shades.
Trend 2: Earthy shades
Think woven baskets, wooden accessories, plants, think stone, rock and animal skins. Think wholesome and natural.
Earthy shades are not necessarily neutral but bold natural textures, patterns, shapes and colours inspired by nature.
As we said earlier this trends often ties in with trend 1: eco choices - most eco choices (when it comes to accessories) are also earthy.
We'll post a few pictures to give you a better feel over the next few days.
#EarthyShades #DecorTrends #DesignTrends
More info on trend 2: Earthy Shades coming tomorrow. But here's a peak at a Milestone Kitchen that has embraced the "Earthy Shades" trend.
What do you think typical characteristics are of spaces that speak to this trend?

Support environmentally-conscious business, support local business.
Conscious consumerism is a HUGE trend. As more people are become educated about the dire health of our earth, more people are making eco-positive choice. People are choosing the sustainable option, the environmentally friendly option, or the locally made option over the cheapest option.
With making the "eco choice" comes the implication of longevity, quality and durability - and that's what we're all going for!

π£ Sustainable is big,
πΆ Re-used materials are big,

Hello everyone. Sabrina here. While this is a platform intended to share freestanding kitchens-related content, I feel that what has happened in KZN and Gauteng has too gravely affected our people for us not to mention it. I do not feel it would be right to continue marketing our brand without acknowledging the severity of the situation.
The last few days have been absolutely crazy. On Monday morning, a couple of our staff who live on the other side of town were unable to come to work because of protesters blocking the road. Those of us who made it to work on Monday had 2 or 3 hours of work before we started noticing fires burning on farms in the distance. When we heard news of gun shots at a business 10kms south of us of us and violent looting in Wartburg, 10kms North of us, Milestone Kitchen's team made the decision to lock up and head home. Not 30 minutes later a bakkie full of hostile men arrived at our factory gate - presumably to check that we were not working, we can't be sure exactly what happened because my family and I hid until they left.
Fortunately, our factory still stands. My heart goes out to the 40 000+ businesses that have been burned to the ground and the 100s of 1000s of people who have lost their jobs. So much has happened and there is so much I would like to address but I will stick to the effects felt by our immediate circle.
We have spent the past few days putting out maliciously lit fires on neighbouring farms, taking shifts patrolling - looking for more burning or possible further vandalism, burning firebreaks behind the factory, and, most importantly, we have spent much time searching for food for us, our staff and their families.
While these violent protests have affected all of us, it is our staff who will suffer most. Our staff who were in the factory when the predominant part of the looting in our town happened. Our staff who are all the primary breadwinners in their households. Our staff who live in an outlying rural area and do not have access to the transport that my family and I do to go on the search of food. Our staff who do not have access to many of the resources, the WhatsApp groups, and other networking prospects that the business owners and privileged community members are able to utilize to find food. Our staff who's livelihoods have been threatened - "do not go back to work or we will burn your work place". While my family may survive the loss of Milestone Kitchens, many of our staff will not. A terrifying prospect.
Extraordinarily, and against all odds, emerging from the gloom are threads of hope. The way communities across all ethnicities and walks of life have joined together to provide for each other has been incredible to witness and be a part of. The South African people have picked themselves up and carried on, adjusting to a "new normal", with unmatched resilience, as if it's always been this way. The humour delicately and discerningly pulled out of a dire situation speaks to the vitality and toughness of our people. The unity, the spirit of Ubuntu, rising out of the ashes is an overwhelming inspiration and I hope that we continue to build on it.
Below are some visuals of the past few days:

π Before and after clean up in our small town of Wartburg (After video in comments).

I have been extremely angry and bitter about the affect this unrest has had on so many people, but we have leant on each other and pulled ourselves up and we are ready to move forwards. With the sound of gunshots in our ears and the smell of ash in our noses we will continue to build on the good work that Milestone Kitchens has accomplished and work towards the vision we have for ourselves and for South Africa. In support of this vision, we will resume posting freestanding kitchen and Milestone Factory related content and we look forward to engaging with you all again.
To the clients who's WhatsApps and emails have been left unanswered, please bear with us while we catch up, while we find new suppliers and while we help our previous suppliers get back on their feet.

Our freestanding units are movable and therefore versatile, originally a Grocery Cupboard this unit is being used for storage in the office.
Also… how stunning is this space?! Flip our clients have taste!
Corner Wall units have always been a touchy subject for us… Covering every inch of your wall, squishing cupboards right into the corners of your kitchen - totally not our style, and totally not a part of the freestanding kitchen ethos. Also, you’d be surprised how many corners aren’t actually 90 degrees π±.
BUT, there are exceptions, sometimes a wall unit in the corner might really finish off the kitchen design perfectly.
So, we have gone ahead and created these Corner Wall Units - βοΈ NEW PRODUCT ALERT βοΈ- here are some pics of the prototypes. We think they’re cute, and you?
Stay tuned for professional photos… coming soon!

A returning client’s second Milestone Kitchen π.
One of the best thing about freestanding kitchens is that you don’t have to lose those favourite pieces and you don’t have to stick to one supplier only. You can use that antique dresser from your grandmother or keep the glass wall units from the previous owner - there are no restrictions!
We ALWAYS recommend a wooden top on our client’s kitchen islands. Wood is warm, winter or summer, it feels good to sit at a wooden island - in opposition to a cold stone top. Wooden tops also bring in an aspect of natural to your decor. It cuts through sharp lines and adds a feeling of softness and realness. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with a wooden top on your island.
Swipe through these photos to see what we mean.
The great thing about freestanding kitchens is that you can have different tops throughout your kitchen - a wooden top on the island, a stainless steel top on your pastry table and a caesarstone top on your sink unit. You name it, Milestone Kitchens can do it.
Get your hands on the latest livingspace mag - you’ll find a little bit of Milestone between those pretty pages!

Meet Bhekisile β€οΈ
Bhekisile is the head of our painting team. She was born and raised in Mpolweni village, 1.5 kms down the road from Milestone Factory. She has been a part of the Milestone family for 20 years.
Bhekisile is the head of our painting team. Think of a paint technique you like - Bhe and her team can do it!
We often hear her laugh resonate through the factory. We are proud to add that her son has completed a degree - the first of our Mpolweni staff's children to get one. They are building a brand new, big house together.
A great job by Dennis and his team.
Our Design Team put so much thought into the perfect combinations of colour and detail for each front of showroom kitchens so that they showcase a timeless and unique free-standing Milestone Kitchen.
We have now started designing new kitchens for the front of our Showroom (wow we're excited!).
BUT before we replace them we thought we would give you, the public, the opportunity to purchase these one of a kind Milestone Kitchens.
Please WhatsApp our showroom on 082 891 1719 or send us an enquiry for more information.
Help us out here - which wall colour would you suggest for our client?
Colour 1 - Green Smoke
Colour 2 - Hollingsworth Green
Colour 3 - Dusted Moss 3
Colour 4 - Dusted Moss 1
Colour 5 - White
We love the fact that we can get an idea of what the kitchen will look like before we decide!

Lindani and some of the Milestone Kitchens staff helped pick up 13 dogs from Mpolweni village last week Wednesday with the SPCA.
The dogs were all sterilised by SPCA Pietermaritzburg, some of them were also treated for mange and given rabies vaccines. They were returned to their owners earlier this week, along with a bag of dog food each.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED!
It was a successful venture and we would really like to do it again. There are a lot more families who need help with their dogs. If you would like to contribute towards helping the lives of more dogs and their owners, please click the following link: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/mpolweni-dog-project.
A big thanks to Pietermaritzburg SPCA, and to Lindani for educating and looking out for his neighbours and their pets.
For those bargain hunters out there - we always have some extra special deals, often on extra special pieces, available in our showroom at 52, 6th street in Parkhurst, Randburg, Johannesburg.
Pop in! Phindile would love to show you around π
Also - we have a super cool announcement to make about your showroom soon. Can’t wait! Watch this space π
1. If there's a leak, you don't have to pull the whole thing apart to fix it! You just turn off the water and move the unit off the wall.
2. You don't have to worry about the cupboards disintegrating over time because of small pools of water soaking into all those nooks and crannies created when you stick some thing steadfastly to the wall. Even if you do get splashes of water here and there - our units are solid wood, they are practically “undisintegratable”.
3. If you invest in a beautiful Butler Sink Unit like this, you don't need to throw it away when you move or renovate. You can just take the whole thing with you!
Meet Phindile
Phindile is our Showroom Administrator. She runs the showroom in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. She is in charge of all things showroom-y: stock lists, sales reports, deliveries, quotation requests, enquiries, the showroom layout, and more.
Phindile has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. She is stylish, beautiful and super efficient. She has such a dry sense of humour we often have no idea if she’s joking or not.
We’re very happy to have her on our team!
If you’re on the fence about freestanding kitchens, you may just have to see them in real life π...
Our showroom in Parkhurst is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm on Saturday.
Here’s a little video of our first official 3D layout π.
The kitchen is the heart of your home, and when you’re ordering from Milestone Kitchens you’re investing in your future and in us, so we really want your kitchen to be perfect! It’s important that we’re all on the same page and that you understand exactly what you’re ordering.
It can also be hard for our clients to visualise our freestanding units in their homes. This new design option (a 3D layout) makes it so much easier! π
We’ve been quiet for a few days - that’s because we’ve been working hard on our VERY FIRST OFFICIAL 3D KITCHEN LAYOUT!
Flip it’s so cool and we’re so proud of it! Big ups to Sam, our Multimedia Designer, for putting it all together.
We charge R1000 for 3D kitchen layout, payable up front, but later deducted from the cost of your order.
We’re chuffed to be featured in the December/January issue of Home Magazine. It’s not too late to get your hands on a copy - its a banger!

It feels like we haven't shown you a French Flair kitchen in ages!
Throwing it back to this classic French Flair Milestone Kitchen in KZN.
We’d love to hear what you like about it?
Meet Sizwe.
Sizwe received the Carpenter of Year award for 2020 for his continued precision, workmanship and excellent understanding of our clients needs.
Sizwe has been head carpenter of the African Allure range since 2010. He selects and prepares his wood expertly so it has that rough, textured finish. He keeps the legs and overall structure solid and chunky but still classy. His cornices are always defined by symmetry. He always wears a hat. And he leads his team calmly and efficiently.
We have included some photos of his work in this post.
We have created a new page! Milestone Kitchens Factory Seconds is a platform for Milestone Kitchens to sell our solid wood, handcrafted, freestanding kitchen (and other) units at DISCOUNTED prices.
All of these units have been on the showroom floor for while, are once off/experimental units or have been damaged in some way.
Please like and follow the page if you are interested in our specials or once-off creations.

Often when we photograph a Milestone Kitchen, I have to do a couple of portraits for articles and stuff. They have mostly turned out okay and so I have compiled a "How To Do a Portrait" list using the techniques that have worked for me:
* Wake up early so that you are not late.
* Get dressed.
* Change your outfit.
* Change your outfit again.
* Put make-up on while you think of a better outfit.
* Keep your outfit but change your shoes.
* Leave for the shoot location on time.
* Brake, stop. Quickly run back to your house and get your other outfit, just in case (NOTE: You will never ever ever use the extra outfit, but you should still bring it. Don’t mess with the system).
* Pick up flowers for the client.
* Call the photographer and tell them you are running late.
* Arrive late.
* Once you are taking the photos ask the photographer if they think you should change your outfit?
* Say: "I AM smiling with my eyes." Up to 10 times.
* Remember that in order to "look comfortable" you usually have to be uncomfortable.
* Assume that the sentence "yes, your hair looks neat" is a lie.
* Receive the proofs.
* Wonder if you should have worn a different outfit.
* Deliberate which photo to choose (at least an hour).
* Write the photograph numbers onto pieces of paper.
* Put pieces of paper into a hat.
* Pick piece of paper out of hat and let photographer know the number.
Regards,
Sabrina
Head Carpenter of the Swedish Style range, Sanele made some pretty pretty units this last month.
He also made some units that were a mix between Swedish Style and French Flair.
They’re all ready to go now!

Sabrina Suggests the Deluxe Coffee Dresser in African Allure.
This isn’t our standard Deluxe Coffee Dresser, it usually has open shelves at the top and has only been made before in Swedish Style. When a client asked for one in African Allure we were very chuffed - we’ve always wanted to do one in our AA range, but haven’t had the opportunity. We weren’t disappointed!
Sabrina says that as soon as she has a big enough lounge, she’s getting one in African Allure painted in Graphite Black (instead of Stoney Grey), with a black vein stain Ash top, and filling with white crockery π½βοΈπ΅π₯π«.
These Coat and Shoe Racks in solid Ash are available exclusively from our showroom at no. 52 6th street in Parkhurst, Randburg, Johannesburg.
What are you waiting for?
This client received their brand new MK units before we went on holiday and they’ve just sent us photos - we love what they’ve done π.
We’re doing a photo shoot next week - stay tuned for the professional pics!
Check out our stories on Wednesday for some behind the scenes action πΈ.
Freestanding kitchens are for practical people with great taste and style. In this video explain the differences between a freestanding and a fitted kitchen and show you some real-life kitchens illustrating the advantages of ‘going freestanding’. We’ve been really looking forward to sharing it.
